Welcome to the year of 2016 slow-pitch. I hope all of you had and are having, depending on when you read this, a good winter. We expect that most of you will be back and enjoying the camaraderie, sportsmanship and fun of of our league.
There have been significant changes made for this year in ways of communicating with you, the players. This is, of course, the web site that you are now looking at. Your executive is fully aware that some will not be able to access information from this site; they should not worry as we will communicate with them in the normal way - snail mail. However, the rest of you will have up-to-date information at your finger tips.
Some of the information in this newsletter is already in place on our web site. However, at the risk of repeating ourselves:
a) the draft will be held on Tues. April 19th 2016, at 1 p.m. in the Evinrude complex.
b) Prior to that the umpires meeting will be held Tues., April 19th at 10 am in the same building
c) and the managers meeting on the same day at 11 am.
All the activities that are usually in this letter are posted under the link marked activities, clever, eh?
We have 3 new managers: Brian Webb - Deeth and White: Bill Deveraux, - Ward 21: and Bob Race - Brew Kettle. The full list of managers is on our web site.
The managers this year should have an easier job. Web emails for all players will be available, so the manager just has to create a group in his email and add all his players to it. He can then forward photos, information pertinent to his team, etc. to his players instead of having to make 13 phone calls. However, most information will be on the web; even rain-outs will be posted, so we foresee very few difficulties in communicating.
We also have new members on the exec. : Bill Young – umpire-in-chief: Bob Boyce, scheduling: Brian Balcombe- Webmaster. Vince Bowe – activities (from V.P. ) The full list of the exec. is on our web site.
We are having trouble recruiting new players. We have to keep the Wed. Feeder teams viable to supply us with players for the Tues. and Thurs. league. The frustration was very evident this year when there were few players to come up and replace players that were taking a short vacation or who were hurt.
This year we had a booth to try and recruit new players at the Sport Expo in the Evinrude, to no avail. We are looking into another Sport Expo in the fall that is more geared to seniors. Usually recruitment has been done by word of mouth. This isn't working as well as in the past. However, if you know of anyone that is interested in playing ball, invite them to one of the games next year.....maybe recruit and get a commitment from them first.
Hope to see all of you in the spring. Have a great winter.
